Delicious pear pie with pears encased in pie crust and a custard filling. Tried and true, this old-fashioned “Grandma Recipe” has deep roots and the taste can’t be beat.
Jump to RecipeI love me a good pie. Don’t you?
Pie has always gotten kind of a bad rep for being fussy. Fussy as in hard to make. Well if that’s the way you’ve thought of pie in the past, that is definitely not the case in this pie.
This pear pie whips together in just a matter of a few short minutes and then you pop it in the oven to bake.
So easy.
This pie has old fashioned roots
I got this recipe from a dear little neighbor grandma, Julia R. who lived just around the corner from us. She loved to bake food for her family and friends. And her food was so good. She was known in the neighborhood for many delicious treats, including this pie.
In fact, another neighbor just told me the other day that Julia made a triple decker pear pie for her son’s wedding reception using this recipe.
Yep. I told you it was good.
Julia was always glad to share her food and her recipes with anyone. And I loved her dearly. Sadly she died a short while ago. She lived into her 90’s, still baking yummy food. I still treasure the recipe card she gave me for this pie, scrawled in her beautiful handwritten penmanship.
Putting my own twist on it
The recipe below is very close to the original recipe she gave me. The one thing I did find is that making it with fresh, ripened pears makes it even better. If you don’t have fresh pears or time to peel them, canned pears are quick and easy and still make a delicious pie. Julia always used canned pears for hers.
My very favorite thing is to eat this pie, made with fresh pears and a scoop of ice cream on top. It sends me right over the edge of bliss. Every time.

In a medium bowl, mix softened butter with 1 cup of white sugar, 4 tablespoon white flour, 2 eggs and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Mix until well combined.
-
Place peeled and sliced pears on top of dough in pie pan and pour custard mixture over top. Bake on a baking sheet in preheated 325 degree F oven for 80 to 90 minutes (1 hour 20-30 minutes) or until top is crusty and lightly brown and inside filling has set.
Recipe Notes
1. I prefer using fresh pears, but you can substitute them for 1 quart canned pears, drained.
