Instant Pot Chicken Bone Broth

Making homemade chicken bone broth in an Instant Pot is super easy. Using homemade broth in any recipe is a great way to add nutrients and flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 Chicken Carcasses see note
  • 6 cups water
  • onions, carrots, celery or other vegetables for additional flavor
  • salt and pepper to taste (if desired)

Instructions

  1. Place chicken carcass(es) and any additional chopped vegetables in the Instant Pot insert and cover with water. I use 6 cups of water for a 4 lb. rotisserie chicken carcass (meaning it was 4 pounds before I removed the meat).

  2. Lock lid in place and cook on HIGH pressure for 90 minutes. After time is up, let pressure release naturally for at least 10 minutes before turning the valve for a quick pressure release.

  3. Strain solids through a fine mesh strainer, reserving the liquids. Add salt and pepper, to taste (if desired). I normally leave unseasoned and season after I've added it in a recipe.

  4. Let cool and refrigerate or freeze for later use. Once refrigerated, a fat layer will rise to the top of the container which can be skimmed off, if desired. Chicken broth can be frozen for up to 3 months. Make sure you allow room in the top of the container for contents to expand. Use in recipes that call for chicken broth.

Recipe Notes

1. A turkey carcass will also work (you may need to cook in in a few batches if it's too large). This method also work well for laying hens or roosters. For an uncooked chicken or rooster (frozen is okay), cooking on High Pressure for 2 hours will soften the meat enough to use in soups.

2. Depending on the size of the pressure cooker, you may be able to fit more than one carcass in the pot at the same time (adding extra water to account).
