Jump to RecipeHello, my friends!
It’s good to be here to share another recipe with you. I love these baked sweet potato fries. We usually serve them alongside these baked steak fries to add variety, color, and nutrition, and flavor. They are quick and easy to make and I know you will love them.
Sweet potatoes have kind of a soft, tender texture that doesn’t crisp up easily in the oven like regular potatoes. But after a million tests, I’ve finally discovered a secret step to get them crispier than just baking does. The texture is satisfying, making these the best oven baked sweet potato fries I’ve ever had.
Here’s how to make baked sweet potato fries
Peel and cut sweet potatoes in half and then cut each half in 3 or 4 spears (about 1/4 to 1/2-inch thick).
Toss the wedges with oil and salt (I like to use coarse sea salt, aff. link) in a large bowl.
Put them on a parchment lined baking sheet in a single layer so they do not touch.
Bake at 450 degrees F for 15 minutes. Then turn them and bake an additional 5 minutes or until lightly browned and tender.
Now here’s the secret step! Turn on broiler and broil for 3 to 5 minutes. The broiler gets the outside crispy quick. You need to watch them carefully so they don’t burn. A little char is okay (and actually gives a bit of flavor), but you don’t want them too black or they’ll start to taste burnt real quick.
Whipping up the simple fry sauce
I’ve been on the lookout for a good homemade fry sauce recipe for a while. I stumbled upon this one on accident –it wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. But knew when I tasted it that it was the fry sauce I wanted to keep making forever.
It is simple–so simple that really doesn’t merit it’s own post. But I wanted to include it because it’s the best homemade fry sauce I’ve had.
Here’s what you need:
- Mayo – I like this homemade mayo the best.
- BBQ Sauce – pick a kind you like the taste of (my favorite is this homemade recipe)
Whip it together and it’s done. Ready to serve with the fries when they come out. Yum.
Keep it simple or not, it’s your choice
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The best recipes are often the simplest ones.
Today’s recipe (really 2 recipes) with just 5 ingredients total–well that’s really about as simple as you can get.
If you are one who appreciates extra flavor and variety, feel free to add more spices, to taste.
As for me, I like them just the way they are.
Baked Sweet Potato Fries with Easy Fry Sauce
These baked sweet potato fries are quick and easy to make and go well with so many meals. The fry sauce is simple, but so delicious. The combo is a pair you'll want to make again and again.
Ingredients
Baked Sweet Potato Fries:
- 3 medium sweet potatoes (about 1 1/2 pounds)
- 2 tablespoons canola or avocado oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
Easy Fry Sauce:
- 1/3 cup mayo (see note)
- 1 tablespoon barbecue sauce (see note)
Instructions
-
Place rack in center of the oven. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Line baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
-
Peel and cut sweet potatoes in half and cut each half in 3 or 4 spears (or 6 to 8 wedges per potato) and place in a large bowl. Add oil and sprinkle salt over potatoes and toss to coat evenly.
-
Place sweet potato wedges evenly on prepared baking sheet in a single layer so they do not touch.
-
Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and turn sweet potatoes. Bake for an additional 5 minutes or until sweet potatoes are lightly brown and tender when pierced with a fork. Turn on broiler and broil sweet potatoes for 3 to 5 minutes or until edges start to crisp slightly. Watch carefully so sweet potatoes do not burn.
-
While fries are baking, mix togther fry sauce by whisking mayo and bbq sauce in a small bowl. When fries are done, serve immediately with fry sauce, if desired.
Recipe Notes
1. For the mayo I like to use this homemade version the best.
2. For the barbecue sauce, you can use any kind you like. We like this homemade one.
3. Any leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated in a 350 degree F oven for 10-15 minutes or until warm.
