Country Sausage Gravy

Hello there.

It’s been quite a weekend around here. I feel like I just stepped off a roller coaster. We had a family funeral and then my cute little niece graduated from high school (a great reminder that I am officially “old”).

Along with those larger events we spent a lot of time with family. Five people stuck in a single hotel room for four nights gets pretty interesting at times, as I’m sure you can imagine. But we managed to get through the weekend all in one piece (which is always a relief).

The kid’s high points were definitely the morning we spent at the zoo and the afternoon reeling fish out of the snake river like crazy. They also enjoyed time with their cousins swimming in the hotel and teaching them to play “wizards” (a fun card game that our neighbors taught us a few weeks ago).

And through the whole experience (both highs and lows) I was reminded how seriously grateful I am for family. So so grateful. What would I do without them?

I’d probably have a few more cogs in the old brain upstairs. Especially after weekends like this one. As I speak we’re driving home and I’m listening to my daughter scream in exhausted nonsensical language. Four days and nights of go go go has certainly taken it’s toll on her. And on my sanity.

But I wouldn’t change it for the world. Family really is everything to me. And I’m so grateful to have mine, as crazy as it can be sometimes.

So today I hopped on here to share this recipe for country sausage gravy. And oh my it’s a good one.

I love this gravy on top of buttermilk biscuits for breakfast (which is more often breakfast-for-dinner in our house). Be sure to try my recipe for the best buttermilk biscuits -yum! And it’s also delicious on top of mashed potatoes for dinner.

Do you like the flavor of sage? Sausage and sage are a flavor match made in heaven in my opinion. And then that little hint of cinnamon and nutmeg thrown in at the end just kind of adds that little element of wow to the whole thing. It takes it from good to great.

Breakfast-for-dinner is definitely one of our favorite dinner themes and these biscuits and gravy are a regular rotation on those nights. This country sausage gravy comes together in just 15 minutes. You can’t beat that for a fast, easy meal.

Family friendly comfort food. That’s the best way to describe this recipe. And it’s always a winner around here.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound country sausage
  • ¼ cup butter
  • cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 teaspoons ground sage
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet on medium heat. Cook sausage until brown. Then transfer the cooked sausage and grease to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain off fat.

  2. Add butter to saucepan and melt over medium heat. Add flour, salt, pepper and sage and whisk for 1-2 minutes until starts to bubble and slightly brown. Slowly pour in milk and water and whisk until there are no lumps.

  3. Continue to heat, whisking often until white sauce begins to thicken. Add cinnamon and nutmeg. Return sausage to pan, stir and heat until warmed through. Serve with biscuits for biscuits and gravy. Also delicious served over mashed potatoes.
