Orange Julius in a glass with a straw and orange slice

Good morning, friends! I’m so excited about this recipe today because it’s another one of those I-make-this-all-the-time-and-finally-got-around-to-documenting-it type recipes.

Probably most of you have heard of orange Julius, right? The delicious orange drink that turns a plain old boring breakfast into something a little bit fancier. We grew up with the stuff and I love it. It’s so refreshing and good.

But if you’re like me the orange julius recipe you grew up with had orange juice concentrate and probably white or powdered sugar.

Am I right?

Orange Julius that’s naturally sweetened

Well I’ve got good news for you today because this recipe I’m sharing is just as tasty (or I think tastier) but uses fresh oranges and honey instead.

I love that it uses whole oranges because whole fruits contain all the fiber and extra nutrition that fruit juices leave out. And in case you are wondering, no there is no nasty pulp texture business going on as long as you have a high powered blender. Everything blends up smooth and beautiful and the texture is perfect.

This orange Julius comes together in a matter of minutes and so adaptable for any special diet needs. You can use any kind of milk you’d like – we usually make ours with whole milk or kefir milk but I think almond or coconut milk would also be delicious.

Anyone else love a green smoothie for breakfast? If you’re feeling venturous try sticking a handful of greens in there and blending them up along with everything else. Yes the color is a bit startling, but I love getting my greens first thing in the morning with a breakfast smoothie. It kick starts my day and helps me feel energized and good all day long.

Okay one more point to share before I leave you prepared to make orange Julius drinks like the pros. I purposely created this recipe as a small-serving recipe, but it’s super easy to double or triple for your family. Just make sure your blender has the capacity if you make a larger batch.

Okay my friends. I’ll leave you to it. Ta ta for now.

Ingredients

  • 1 large orange peeled
  • ½ cup milk see note
  • 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons honey
  • splash vanilla extract
  • ¾ to 1 cup large ice cubes

Instructions

  1. Add orange, milk, honey, and vanilla extract to a high powered blender jar and blend until honey is dissolved and mixture is smooth.
  2. Add ice and blend until smooth. Serve immediately.

Recipe Notes

1. We usually make this recipe with whole milk or kefir milk but you can use any kind of milk you would like.

2. This recipe is easily doubled or tripled if you need more servings. Just make sure you don’t fill your blender past it’s capacity.

3. For a smoothie variation try adding a handful of greens (I like to use baby spinach) and blend along with the rest.
