Strawberries

It’s getting to be spring when strawberries are in season and oh boy, I love fresh strawberries!

My garden strawberries + a book we love

Unfortunately for me, the deer that roam our backyard do too. I think they ate most of my strawberry plants this winter so I don’t know if I’ll get any out of my garden this year. Grrr….

It’s a really good thing they sell them in the store.

Otherwise I might be crazy enough to set up a base camp in the backyard and stand guard all winter dressed in a parka to save my strawberry plants from the hungry deer.

That sentence reminds me of the children’s book that my daughter loves right now: The little mouse, the red ripe strawberry, and the big hungry bear (aff. link).

One of my favorite children’s books ever. Such an oldie but goodie.

I read it so often I probably could recite it to you right now on the fly.

Hello little mouse. What are you doing?

Okay I’ll spare you the rest.

But I totally relate to the little mouse who feels the need to guard this strawberry from the big hungry bear. Only in my case it’s the deer. They are super pesky where we live.

Early this morning my husband and I saw a herd of about eight of them on our 12-mile moonlit bike ride. That was a little scary. I wasn’t sure if they were going to cross the road right in front of me and knock me flat while I was going 15 mph on two skinny little wheels down a pretty big hill.

Thankfully they didn’t…but my heart stopped for a few seconds there.

So yeah they are kinda cute, but quite pesky. Especially when they eat my plants and fruit trees.

Like strawberries.

Mmmmh. Strawberries.

Thank goodness the stores sell them. I always buy extra when they go on sale so I can make this strawberry freezer jam that I posted last week.

I also like to freeze whole strawberries for yummy treats like the recipe I’m sharing today.

We make these strawberry smoothie milkshakes all year long

They are so good.

My daughter is actually the one who started to call them strawberry milkshakes and it just kinda stuck. They’re really more like a smoothie, but milkshakes just sound fun.

These strawberry milkshake smoothies are the perfect after-school snack. My kids love love them. I serve them in a tall glass and stick in a milkshake straw (aff. link).

Strawberry Milkshake Smoothies

And wallah!

They magically change from smoothie to milkshake without even adding ice cream.

Amazing.

And you won’t believe how fast those boys of mine can down these things. Seriously. It’s like they are there one second and gone the next.

Sluuuurp!

Sometimes we’ll serve them for a easy, healthy (no-sugar) dessert. And do you know what else we like to do?

Drink them for breakfast.

Usually I will change the name to strawberry smoothies and omit the milkshake straw if I serve them for breakfast just so no one starts thinking that drinking a milkshake for breakfast is what we do.

And they’re still not on to me yet. Sneaky, huh?

You can also throw in a handful of spinach greens to make a tasty green smoothie. I love drinking green smoothies for breakfast. It gives me energy and always makes my body happy to get healthy greens first thing in the morning.

And if you use kefir milk, I’ve included in the notes a variation to use kefir. The kefir version is super tasty (I especially like to use it in my breakfast smoothies).

And probably nobody else cares but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the fact that this recipe makes ONE smoothie milkshake (TWO if we’re talking about little kiddos). And it’s easy to double and triple as long as your blender has the capacity. It makes my mathematical brain so happy. Sigh.

Okay my friends. I’ll leave you with the recipe while I go take inventory of my strawberry plants to see if there are any survivors.

Wish me luck. I’m sure I’ll need it.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup milk see note
  • ½ cup plain yogurt see note
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • splash vanilla extract
  • 5 frozen strawberries

Instructions

  1. In a blender jar combine milk, yogurt, honey and vanilla extract. Blend well for about a minute until honey is mostly dissolved.

  2. Add frozen strawberries and blend until smooth. Serve in glasses with milkshake straws.

Recipe Notes

1. I’ve only used whole milk in this recipe, but feel free to experiment with whatever kind you’d like.

2. I’ve made this with both Greek and regular yogurt and both are delicious.

3. You can also make this a kefir milkshake by using 1 cup of kefir milk in place of the milk and yogurt.

4. I haven’t tried it but I imagine Xgave would work as a substitute for honey.

5. You can throw a handful of spinach in for an easy green breakfast smoothie. It really doesn’t taste like spinach at all. The berries mask the spinach flavor. Such a great way to get your greens!

6. Sometimes for my breakfast smoothie I will use fresh strawberries so it’s not super cold. And I really like it that way too.
